At a time when Pope Francis is heading towards giving a new dimension to the Catholic Church, a priest from Kerala has not only suggested the kind of clothes girls should wear, but also said that the names given to children by parents are senseless.

According to media reports, in a pastoral letter published by the Idukki diocese, Bishop Mathew Anikuzhikattil suggests means to strengthen faith in families and emphasises on the need to shape a Christian culture in the modern times.

In the letter, which was to be read during the Holy Mass on April 23, the Bishop advises girls to wear clothes that goes below their knees while attending the church or on the dais when reading the Holy-bible. The letter also tells women to keep separate clothes for attending Church prayers and rituals.

On giving names to children, the Bishop dismisses the choices of name made by the parents as they do not reflect the Christian spirit or influence, adding that the nickname should also be a Christian name. The Bishop in the letter further tells parents to not criticise or blame priests and monks in front of the children as this will effect their child’s inclination towards divinity.

Elaborating on the ways of raising a child in good faith, the letter tells parents to teach their children to obey the church authorities. “Encourage expecting mothers to take part in prayers. Baptism of newborns should be conducted within eight days of their birth. The ceremony should not be delayed for weeks and months in the name of grand celebrations,” reported an English daily.

Anikuzhikattil also urges parents to limit the usage of cellphones and social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp among the children.  According to the reports, he has also asked the parents to not encourage their kids to go after material gains. “Many young Christians choose married life without purity and this is a reason for lack of faith,” he said.

During Christmas last year, Bishop Anikuzhikattil in yet another pastoral letter had called upon people to boycott birth control pills. Earlier this year, another Kerala priest made outrageous remarks against the dressing of women by saying that women who wear jeans, t-shirts should be drowned in the sea.
