With the purpose of planting more trees and worshipping nature's greenery, Harela festival is being observed in Uttarakhand these days. In view of this, targets are set for each district in the state and the Forest Department and many self-help organisations are carrying out large scale plantation works.

Efforts are being made at various levels to see how trees grow on treeless land, while an innovative experiment has been done in Tehri district.

In this experiment, seeds are thrown on empty grounds using a device attached on a flying drone. This is being done for the first time in Uttarakhand. This method will be useful for those places which are far from human reach.

This initiative of Tehri Forest Division and Sankalp Taru Foundation may prove to be a milestone in coming times. CDO Ashish Bhatgai and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Coco Rosé trialled the drone device. The CDO said that permission has been obtained from the Civil Aviation Department for the drone. The forest department wants to use this technology and will have to get a nod from the government.

How It’s done

Sankalp Taru's Innovation Specialist Umesh Chaudhary said that the weightlifting capacity of this drone is 700 grams. "From 300 meters high, it can lay seeds and has an aerial distance of three kilometres. We can build a lush green forest on deforested land," added Chaudhary. On this occasion, DFO Coco Rosé said the seeds of peepal and padam have been thrown from the drone on the ground if this experiment is successful, then the Forest Department will further use this technology.

"Our organisation is planting trees in Dhamri, Chamoli, Barwal, Chopadia, etc. villages of Tehri. We run tree plantation programs under the 'Go Green' campaign across the country," said Ravibhan Singh, head of operations at the Foundation. He also informed of the foundation's growth of trees at five places in arid areas of Rajasthan.
