West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to criticise the central government on the completion of two years of demonetisation saying it had ruined the economy and lives of millions.

Firing fresh salvos at the Centre, Mamata said that it had cheated the country through demonetisation and also said that people would give a fitting reply.

"#DarkDay Today is the second anniversary of #DeMonetisation disaster. From the moment it was announced I said so. Renowned economists, common people and all experts now all agree," read one of her tweets. The other one read, "#DarkDay The government cheated our nation with this big #DeMonetisation scam. It ruined the economy and the lives of millions. People will punish those who did this."

In 2016, on this day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had declared Rs 500 and 1000 as invalid. He had said that the decision was taken to check increase in black money in the country. Mamata had been against demonetisation right from the word go, alleging there were vested interests of the ruling party behind the move.

In another development, during his visit to Kolkata on Thursday, former finance minister and Congress MP P Chidambaram too said that the BJP government had failed on all the three objectives of demonetisation. "The generation of black money has not come down because every other day we see black money being seized by cops. It has not ended fake currency because counterfeiters have successfully counterfeited the new Rs 2000 and Rs 500 notes. Demonetisation has not rendered any currency notes worthless and the government has not reaped a bonanza of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh crore as practically all demonetised notes – 99.3 per cent – were returned to the RBI. In fact it was the most ingeniously designed official money laundering scheme," Chidambaram said.

Asked about the name changing spree of the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, he said, "There are no talks about growth and development and achhe din lies in a shambles. After achieving nothing in the last five years, they have gone back to their old themes of Hindutva, giant statues and grand temples."

Talking about alliances to defeat BJP, he said state-wise alliance should be formed to defeat the BJP and what Bengal was supposed to do, the AICC will take the decision in that regard.
