Noted Hindi poet Kedarnath Singh passes away in Delhi at 83

Renowned Hindi poet Kedarnath Singh passed away on Monday evening at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He was 83. He was admitted to the hospital after complaining of stomach ache, according to reports.

Singh, best known for his poetry collection titled Akaal Mein Saras, was a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award (1989) and Jnanpith Award (2013). Singh was one of India’s most prominent modern Hindi poets besides being an essayist and a well-known critic. His contribution to Hindi literature of the decades earned him admirers, fans, accolades and countless love.

He was born in 1934 in a village called Chakia in Uttar Pradesh. He completed his graduation from Varanasi and did his MA and PhD from Kashi Hindu Vishwavidyalaya. 

He had been a professor and head of the Department of Hindi Language at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Indian Languages Centre.

Singh’s works include collections of poems such as Zameen Pak Rahi Hai, Baagh, Tolstoy aur Cycle, Yahan se Dekho and Abhi Bilkul Abhi. Among his essays and stories are Kalpana aur Chhayavad, Kabristan Mein Panchayat, Hindi Kavita Mein Bimb Vidhan and Mere Samay ke Shabd.
