Students from New Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College have alleged that locals from nearby areas have been throwing water balloons filled with semen, in what appears to be the latest case of sexual harassment and tormenting of women in the national capital.

According to a report by Scroll, a hostel resident of the college described how she was hit by one of the balloons. “It dried white on my black leggings, and the foreign smell clearly indicated that it wasn’t water,” she wrote. But she did not know what it was until a friend in the hostel told her that “semen-flinging…was currently the Holi fad in the back market area”.

The college’s women’s development cell held an open meeting with about 40 students during lunch break on Tuesday. A teacher who attended it said she was stunned to hear that the psychology student’s experience was “not one isolated incident”.

Notably the report added that such cases of harassment did not surprise the alumnus of the college, some who told the news website that they had been struck by the balloons, adding that this was the first time it was being reported on social media.

Some people, mostly men, have rubbished the allegations, getting into the scientific composition of semen. One person even claimed that to ‘make a balloon filled with semen, about 50 odd men would have to ejaculate in a balloon at the same time.’

Delhi reported the maximum number of rape cases amongst 19 major cities at 40%, besides the highest crime rate in 2016, according to the data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The capital also reported 33% (13,803 cases out of total 41,761 cases in 19 cities) of total crimes against women in 2016.
