Not against poor or less beautiful women, says AAP's Preeti Menon in defence of Somnath Bharti's comments

Mr Somnath Bharti, AAP MLA from Malviyanagar, is no stranger to controversy and yet again has his foot in the mouth over comments made by him in the assembly debate in Delhi. The debate was on crimes against women and police incompetency over the same in Delhi. Bharti said, "If Delhi government is given full freedom, beautiful women loaded with jewellery can go out at night." The statement triggered angst amongst the Twitterati and Opposition alike.

In defence of Somnath Bharti, AAP leader Preeti Menon said, "What he meant was that even the most beautiful women, who are highest at risk will be safe under the party's governance. The way a woman with loaded jewel is out in the night is more prone, same way the most vulnerable beautiful women will be safe, please don't put the statement out of context."

On asking whether Somnath thinks that the poor and ugly are at any less a risky position at night, or how are the rapes of 4 year old's justified,  Preeti retaliated saying "I accept that we need to improve our language and go beyond the patriarchal benchmarks, there is room for improvement. But you should understand that we did not have anything against the poor or less beautiful, the statement was not intended to be portrayed like the way it has." said Preeti.

Preeti claims that for the first time in Delhi a special exhaustive session for the safety of women is being put to action. "We are going to get rid of this problem from it's roots, discussion about the conditions of Police officers, their low wages and tough work, is being done. Hype like this will take the light away from the matter." said Preeti.
