Not a single death due to Blue Whale Challenge: Centre

The Centre claimed not a single death happened across India influenced due to internet-based suicide game, Blue Whale Challenge. The law enforcement agencies were completely perplexed after there were several allegations that the teenagers and youths were committing suicide allegedly while playing Blue Whale Challenge game.

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Ahir in Lok Sabha clarified, "Involvement of Blue Whale Challenge Game in any of these incidents (suicides) could not be established."

The minister stated that instances of children committing suicide while playing Blue Whale Challenge Game were reported in various States and Union territories. Thereafter all the Sates and union territories were directed to monitor the situation closely and take action against proponent of the game.

In this regard, a Committee was formed under the chairmanship of Director General, Computer Emergency Response Team-India (CERT-In) to investigate cases of suicide committed or attempted allegedly using 'Blue Whale Challenge Game'.

The panel analysed the internet activities, device activities, call records and other social media activity, other forensic evidences and also interacted with rescued victims associated with these incidents. And the committee found that involvement of Blue Whale Challenge Game in any of these incidents could not be established.

The minister also highlighted that law enforcement personnel have been trained to deal with such kind of crime. He said that training is an ongoing activity and various national and state police academies and institutes regularly organise training programs.

"Law Enforcement Agencies regularly monitor the social media sites and take action under existing legal provisions for removal of malicious contents and materials," he pointed.

Last year, in the wake of the allegation of number of deaths due to Blue Whale Challenge, the Home Ministry had issued an advisory to police across India to take strict against concerned websites that provide links to download the deadly game.

Besides, show cause notices were also issued to Facebook, Google, Yahoo, the state of Delhi and the Union of India by the Delhi high court over a writ petition seeking a ban on the game
