Union Ministers Sushilkumar Shinde, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Sachin Pilot and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda were among the candidates who filed their nominations today for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha election in 122 seats.
BJP's Col Sonaram, who candidature has riled Jaswant Singh and his supporters, filed his papers from Barmer seat in Rajasthan. Misa Bharti, who was accompanied by her father RJD chief Lalu Prasad, submitted her nomination from Patliputra in Bihar for her maiden bid to enter Lok Sabha.
Nominations for the fourth and fifth phases will close tomorrow.
Fighting his first Lok Sabha election from home state Jammu and Kashmir, Union Health Minister Azad was flanked by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and state Congress chief Saif-uddin-Soz as he filed his papers from Udhampur-Doda seat at the election office in Kathua.
Home Minister Shinde submitted his papers from Solapur Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and NCP president Sharad Pawar. Gowda, a five-time MP, is contesting from Hassan, a JDS bastion in Karnataka dominated by Vokkaliga community to which he belongs. Former Chief Minister late J H Patel's son Mahima Patel filed his nominations as JDS candidate from Davengere.
A total of 152 nominations from 122 candidates were received today in Karnataka. 318 candidates have filed nominations for all 28 seats in the state so far.
Corporate Affairs Minister Pilot filed his nomination from Ajmer Lok Sabha seat in Rajasthan, where so far 147 candidates have filed nominations for 20 LS seats. Sachin's mother Rama Pilot also put up her papers as a substitute candidate from Ajmer.
In UP, Rashtriya Parivartan Dal president D P Yadav from Sambhal, Congress candidates Begum Noor Bano from Moradabad and Saleeem Iqbad Shervani from Aonla and SP candidate Dharmendra Yadav from Badaun were among 56 candidates who filed their nominations.
So far 124 candidates have filed their nominationss for 11 seats that will go to polls in this phase. In Madhya Pradesh, Congress' P C Sharma filed nomination from Bhopal.
In the fourth phase election will be held on April 12 in five seats---three out of 14 seats in Assam, lone seat in Sikkim, one out of two seats in Tripura. In the fifth phase, polling will be held for 122 seats in 13 states on April 17.
Scrutiny will be on March 27 and the last date for withdrawal is March 29.
