The Mumbai police have busted a call centre racket with the arrest of eight persons, including two former employees of an insurance firm, from Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

Kaptansingh Chouhan alias Bobby (26), Anilsingh Rajawat (24), Rajnathsingh Chouhan (19), Ashishkumar Gupta (30), Harish Goswami (28), Raja alias Anil Tiwari (20), Upendra Bhadoria (23) and Rinku Solanki (24) were arrested by the Crime Branch of Mumbai police three days ago.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Nisar Tamboli said a resident of suburban Malad here had approached the police with a complaint of cheating.

The complainant received a call from Kaptansingh sometime in 2015, telling him that if he took out a new insurance policy, he would be eligible to win a prize. Later, the complainant was asked to deposit "processing fee" to collect his `prize' of Rs 32.47 lakh.

Between April 2015 and February 2017, he deposited a total of Rs 22.02 lakh in various bank accounts as told by the accused, but never received any prize money.

The Crime Branch sleuths tracked location of a mobile number provided by the complainant. After finding out that the mobile had been recently used in Goa, a police team rushed there and visited more than 200 hotels and restaurants within a 1.5 km stretch to get clues about the owner of the mobile.

They got Kaptansingh's name from a hotel where he had checked in, and his Noida address. On August 16, a Crime Branch team followed him to the call centre in Noida and arrested him and others.

Police said that Kaptansingh and Ashishkumar Gupta were former employees of a renowned insurance company, and had stolen data of its policy holders.

The gang had cheated several persons using the same modus operandi, police said. Further probe is on.
