A day after six unidentified and armed assailants allegedly raped four women and killed one man of a family, the Gautambudh Nagar police and Chief Medical Officer Anurag Bhargav said on Friday that a preliminary medical examination suggests there was no sign of rape.

Samples have been sent to Lucknow for further examination, and a report is likely to be received within 15 to 20 days. The victims' family has slammed police for making the claims.

The police said on Thursday evening that the women had suspected their neighbours' role in the heinous act. Quoting new reports on Friday, the police said the women have ruled out the neighbours' role.

"Why would women lie? No woman wants to be insulted by making false claims of rape," a family member told DNA.

Love Kumar, Gautambudh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police, said, "This is not a staged case, but it is a fact that the initial medical exam suggested no signs of rape."

"The team conducted a medical examination under the standard rules of forensic medical care for victims of sexual assault. The doctors did not find any sign of rape. There were no injuries on the private parts. No semen was found," said Bhargav.

Unable to control the sudden spurt in crime, a senior minister in the Yogi Adityanath-led government made a casual remark, saying the BJP government had never promised a "crime-free" Uttar Pradesh to the people of the state. "We never talked about a zero-crime state. The BJP government has always maintained from Day 1 that it would not allow anyone to take law and order into their hands, and will punish criminals without discrimination," said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna in Ghaziabad on Thursday.

The senior BJP minister downplayed his statement, blaming the media for distorting his statement. "I meant to say that incidents do take place since police cannot be deployed in proportion to the population of the state," he clarified.
