Raju Shetti, the president of NDA ally Swabhimani Shetkari Sangathana (SSS), said on Monday that farmers are feeling cheated at the hands of the Narendra Modi government, which he said has gone back on the promises it had made to the community. The SSS, along with 100 other farmers' organisations — clubbed together as the Kisan Mukti Yatra — is on a nationwide tour to press for its demands, indicating a second wave of farmers' protests in the country following the killing of six farmers at the hands of the police in Mandsaur recently.

Talking to DNA over the phone, Shetti said that they are pressing for the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's report on fair prices to farmers for their crops, and the formation of a drought alleviation commission on the lines of a National Water Commission. He further said that the Modi government has submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court, saying that it is not feasible for the government to implement the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations.

"Now, farmers are feeling cheated by the NDA government, particularly by Modi. So we have decided to part ways and raise awareness among farmers across India. We are not professional politicians. We are here for the farmers and will fight for the farmers. If their issues are not addressed, then there is no point to staying with the NDA," Shetti said.

He added: "On Sunday, we were in Nasik and Dhule and on Tuesday, we go to Gujarat. We will also travel to Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The Kisan Mukti Yatra will end on July 18 with a big farmers' rally at Jantar Mantar and that will be the last ultimatum to the BJP government."
