The Maharashtra government today instructed the district collectors not to allow bullock cart races in the state till the rules for these races are published.

A government circular said that the state passed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Maharashtra Amendment) Act 2017 intending to allow bullock cart races, and has started the process of framing the rules under the act.

No permission can be given for races until these rules are framed and published in the official gazette, the circular said.

The Bombay High Court, on August 16, had restrained the government from granting permission to bullock cart races in the state in the absence of rules.
