Henceforth, you won't be able to buy petrol from any of the pumps in Maharashtra if you are not wearing a helmet. Not just the rider, the pillion-rider too should be wearing one.

Maharashtra government, on Thursday, imposed a "no helmet, no petrol" rule, forbidding petrol pumps from selling fuel to bikers without helmets or are having pillion-riders without helmet.

This was announced by transport minister Diwakar Raote in the assembly. Raote said that the state government directive to the petrol pumps is aimed at making wearing of headgear compulsory for motorcyclists.

Raote informed that the law will be strictly enforced as per the directives laid down by the Supreme Court. He pointed out that the road safety committee has also made wearing of helmets compulsory, in accordance with the Motor Transport Act.

While neighbouring Telangana government has also imposed same rule for Adilabad district, Kerala government, recently, came out with a similar rule recently, barring fuel pumps across the state from selling petrol to bikers without helmets.
