In a speech laden with witty one-liners, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday rebutted Congress president Rahul Gandhi as his government defeated the no-confidence motion brought by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

In his point-by-point retort to Mr Gandhi, Narendra Modi also responded to Congress chief's remarks that the PM could not look into his eyes.

Modi went on to list names of leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel, Morarji Desai, Chandra Shekhar and Pranab Mukherjee among others who he said tried to see eye-to-eye with the Congress and the result is known to everyone.

"It was also asked that Prime Minister could not put 'his eyes into mine'. Madam Speaker, this is true. Who am I to put my eyes into yours. Son of a poor mother, born in a backward caste, coming from a village. You are a 'naamdaar' (known by name) and I am 'kaamdar' (known by work). I cannot dare see you eye-to-eye," Modi said.

"And history is the witness that Subhas Chandra Bose tried to look into the eyes, what was done to him. Morarji Desai is the witness, he tried to look into the eyes, what was done to him. Jayprakash Narayan is the witness, he tried to look into the eyes, what was done to him. Chaudhary Charan Singh tried to look into his eyes, what was done to him. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel tried to look into the eyes, what was done to him. Chandra Shekhar tried to look into the eyes, what was done to him. Pranab Mukherjee tried to look into the eyes, what was done to him. And this is not it, our Sharad Pawar ji tried to look into the eyes, what was done to him," he said in an impassioned speech.

"How people who dare to look into eyes are insulted, how they are thrown out. And we are 'kaamdar', how can we look into the eyes of 'naamdaar'.

During his speech that lasted nearly one-and-half hour, Modi also took a dig at the Congress president's hug and the wink as he made gestures with his hands and eyes to show Gandhi's action.

Mr Gandhi's hug to Modi and the subsequent 'wink' after coming back to his seat angered treasury benches and the Congress leader was also reprimanded by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

Modi, responding to the no-confidence motion moved by the BJP's former ally TDP and supported by Congress among other opposition parties, said only the 125 crore people of the country can decide who would sit in the prime minister's chair or who can be unseated.

"What is the hurry," Modi said while referring to Gandhi's hand gestures when he came across to PM's chair and hugged him during the non-confidence motion debate.

After nearly 12-hour debate, Modi government won the trust vote by 325-126 votes.
