Countering the NDA MPs’ attacks on the Congress, the party’s leader in the Lower House Mallikarjun Kharge said in the last 70 years, the Congress built the country and the BJP should pay attention to that.

“If we had functioned like you, then democracy would have been finished,” said Kharge.

Accusing the BJP of running a divide and rule policy, Kharge said the party has ensured that some MPs have abstained from the House and some have left on the no-confidence vote day.

“The way you are operating now, the way you are mistreating minorities, compromising on freedom of speech, spreading inequality, democracy would have been demolished by now had we adhered to your measures,” Kharge said.

Kharge, who had boycotted the meeting on Lokpal on Thursday, said the government was unable to bring in an ordinance on the Bill.

“If the party cannot bring in a small amendment, then it has no right to speak of democracy,” said the Congress leader.

He said that while CBI director and vigilance commissioner were part of the Committee, Kharge was called as a special invitee and not as the leader of Opposition on the floor of the House.

He also attacked the government on the rising cases of farmer suicides.

“They say we have done a lot for the farmers, whereas on the other hand the cases of farmer suicides have increased over the past few years. They have only talked about Adani and Ambani, not farmers,” he said.
