Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday pitched for reservation in private sector and called for a debate on it at the national level for Parliament to take a decision on it.
Nitish was defending Bihar government’s recent move of introducing quota in outsourced services while addressing mediapersons after his weekly Lok Samvad here. Interestingly, Nitish’s call for private sector reservation found support from ally-turned-foe Lalu Prasad Yadav, President of Rashtriya Janata Dal, which sits in Opposition with its 80 MLAs, after being dumped by Nitish in July.
Citing provisions of Bihar Reservation Act 2003, Nitish said the state government was working in accordance to it. “When the government is hiring workforce through outsourcing, the payment is made through state treasury. Hence, it is but natural that they should adhere to Reservation Act,” the CM said.
He added, “Those who understand the basic sentiment of reservation will never have any doubts regarding it. It is our personal opinion that quota should also be applicable on the jobs in private sector and there should be a debate on it.”
Lalu too supported the statement saying he wanted to bring the marginalised sections in the mainstream, though he added, “Private sector means big companies. However, how many such companies are there in Bihar that reservation will be provided to the deprived sections?”
It may be recalled that reservation had turned out to be a major issue ahead of 2015 Bihar assembly polls.
Nitish also defended his decision to quit the Mahagathbandhan and join forces with the BJP in July, saying he had difficulties in running the previous regime. “It was difficult to contain liquor or sand mafias or maintain law and order in the state. Our decision to quit was taken for people of Bihar,” he said.
