Bihar CM and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar warned on Monday that his party will not compromise with forces that divide the society, in what was seen as a veiled attack on ally BJP whose leaders have been seen making communally controversial remarks.

He also strongly pitched for special category status for Bihar. A similar demand for Andhra Pradesh saw TDP pull out of the BJP-led government at the Centre last week.

"Our policy is very clear in this regard. We cannot support those trying to divide the society, nor will we compromise with corruption. We firmly believe in social harmony and taking everyone together. My government works for development with justice," Nitish said in Patna.

This was a day after another ally, LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan, told BJP to "win over the confidence of all sections of the society and change its perception towards minorities."

Nitish broke his alliance with RJD and Congress last year to form a new government in Bihar with BJP. He was responding to controversial remarks made by some BJP leaders.

"People are free to speak their mind. In politics, many statements are made. But there will be no compromise on developmental works undertaken by our government. It will continue as usual," said Nitish.
He said he has not given up on his the special category status demand for Bihar "even for a moment."

"This is an important demand that we have been making for 10 years. I first wrote to the PM in 2005 and have not been silent on it. But that does not mean that I need to speak about it every day," he said.

Paswan's and Nitish's comments follow BJP's shock defeat last week in all three Lok Sabha by-elections — two in UP and one in Bihar.

Nitish said that there was no doubt that Bihar was one of the most backward states of the country and the Centre should grant it special status category to speed up growth and improve the condition of the people.
