Bihar chief minister and JD (U) national president Nitish Kumar, among the few in Opposition who supported scrapping of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes by PM Narendra Modi, said on Monday that his party will hold a meeting post December 30 to analyse the effects, as well as the good and bad of demonetisation and then take any further stand on it.

“My personal stand in known to everyone. I supported notebandi on November 9. But, I have also been saying that demonetisation alone is not sufficient to take on black money hoarders. The government should also attack on “benami” (proxy-owned) properties and enforce liquor prohibition if it is really serious about hitting on black money,” Nitish said while addressing a news conference in Patna on Monday.

The Bihar CM said Prime Minister has asked for 50 days for the situation to improve and they will wait and watch till then. “It is a national issue. We will call a party meeting and take suggestions from everyone on it. They we’ll see what has to be done,” he said.

The party spokespersons too have earlier said that the party will review its stand on demonetisation post December 30, when PM Modi’s 50 day time will end.

It may be mentioned that Nitish has been among the few Opposition leaders who unequivocally supported demonetisation of big notes by even going against his alliance partners Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress.

Reiterating that cashless economy will not work in India, Nitish said, “As per my information, even in the United States cashless transaction are limited to 40-45%. While cashless transactions in India too will increase, it is not going to happen suddenly, no matter how much you advertise about it,” he said.

He also said the Centre should take an initiative to make it mandatory to disclose the name of those who make even 1 rupee donation to political parties. Nitish was referring to Election Commission of India’s recommendation to limit anonymous donations to Rs 2,000.
