With the upcoming Assembly polls in Nagaland less than a month away, alliances are being crafted in full swing. JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar has entered the fray in the state and the BJP is forging new ties with former CM Neiphiu Rio. And, all of this is giving CM TR Zeliang a sleepless night.

The JD(U) plans to field five candidates in the state, and to give a final shape to his plans, Nitish will visit the National Capital on January 27 to meet JD(U) leaders from the state. The party is in touch with both factions of the ruling Naga People's Front — CM TR Zeliang's followers and those of party president, former Chief Minister Shurhozelie. NPF leader and former minister Tenucho had met Kumar some time back in Bihar Bhavan to discuss the possibilities. Shurhozelie has recently hinted at severing ties with the BJP.

JD(U) general secretary KC Tyagi said that JD(U) is seeking to contest Nagaland election in alliance with BJP and regional parties and all these issues will be discussed when Kumar comes to New Delhi.

If BJP-JD(U) alliance happens, it will be the first time for the Nitish Kumar's party to contest any election in alliance with BJP after it re-joined the NDA in July last year.

Tyagi had a telephonic discussion with the Bihar Chief Minister on last Thursday to discuss Nagaland polls. Tyagi was on a three-day visit to Nagaland last month.

In addition, the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) founded by former CM Neiphiu Rio and Lok Sabha MP Chingwang Konyak is another player JD(U) is eyeing at. Rio has also been meeting senior BJP leaders in the national capital at the initiative of BJP general secretary Ram Madhav and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The BJP's move to forge an alliance with Rio has given sleepless nights to CM Zeliang. He held talks with Conrad Sangma of the National People's Party, which is in alliance with the BJP in Manipur and in Rajasthan, without any avail. The party has now called for an emergency meeting on Tuesday to adopt some resolutions, one of which likely to be proposed by Zeliang, will be to not break their alliance with the BJP.
