Challenging his former ally and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to come clean on the multi-crore Srijan scam before the public, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav on Tuesday sought to know why the embezzlement of public money was ignored by the government despite being red flagged in the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India report.

Levelling serious allegations against Bihar's ruling parties — the Janata Dal (United) and the Bharatiya Janata Party — as well as Nitish and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi, Lalu said, "The CAG has highlighted Srijan's irregularities in its audit report for the financial year ending March 2008. The present alliance was in power at that time too, but it ignored the irregularities."

Sharing copies of the CAG report as well as an account statement of Bank of Baroda in which the cheque presented by Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Limited-Bhagalpur has bounced at least four times between July 10 and 29, 2017, Lalu said, "Nitish claims he has unearthed the scam, but he hid information of the cheques being dishonoured. In fact, the special investigation team (SIT) formed to probe the scam includes officials close to him who are being used to murder the witnesses of the scam."

Lalu also raised an eyebrow over the JD-U giving a ticket in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls to retired IAS officer K P Ramaiah, who in 2003 as then district magistrate of Bhagalpur had ordered all block development officers for opening accounts with a bank run by Srijan.

The RJD President charged Nitish as the "main accused" in the Rs 2,000 crore scam and said, "We will not rest till an FIR is lodged against Nitish and Sushil Modi, who made silk-city Bhagalpur a hub of public funds embezzlement." He added that the RJD will take it to a logical conclusion by making a series of exposes in the scam. "We do not believe that there will be an impartial probe by the CBI with their governments at state and central level. Hence, we will move the apex court for monitoring of the probe," Lalu said.

Lalu's younger son and leader of Opposition in Bihar legislative assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said, "Nitish got a whiff that the scam can no longer be kept under the wraps after the cheques bounced in July. After that he visited Delhi several times and plotted for disintegration of the Grand Alliance government in Bihar."
