The Bihar government is set to launch “safe city surveillance scheme”, under which it will bring all major public places under the watch of close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and improve the overall crime control in the state.

This scheme is especially being launched for checking crime against women, such as eve-teasing and molestation, harassment, snatching incidents and roadside scuffles etc. It will also help in keeping a track of miscreants.

The scheme, which will be launched in a phase-wise manner, will commence from capital Patna.

A sum of over Rs 110 crore has been sanctioned for the scheme, under which intallation of CCTV cameras will be installed at all public places. “Patna is already under video surveillance as CCTV cams are installed at some major thoroughfares and strategic location. These are used for traffic management as well as crime control. However, under the new scheme, all public places will be covered, increasing the net of video monitoring,” said a senior Bihar Police official.

The Bihar home department will be the nodal agency for implementation of the safe-city surveillance scheme. “The network of CCTV cameras will be connected to a control room, where it will be monitored by policemen round the clock. Those in the control room will coordinate with their counterparts in the field and police stations, to alert them about any incident in their area,” he said.

The official said city people will also be able to alert the control room, if they anticipate any trouble, and quick and appropriate action will be initiated.

The state government has been under fire over “deteriorating law and order” as murder and loot incidents have seen an increase in the last few months.
