Nitish Katara case: Timeline of how the trial unfolded

The Delhi High Court on Friday awarded life term to Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav's son Vikas Yadav and his cousin Vishal without remission for 25 years in 12-year-old Nitish Katara murder case. 

The court awarded life imprisonment to Sukhdev Pehelwan, third convict in Katara murder case, without remission for 20 years. The court awarded additional 5 year-jail term to all three convicts for destruction of evidence in the case.

The Nitish Katara murder case, as it proceeded from February 2002 when his body was found.

Feb 16-17, 2002: Nitish Katara abducted from a marriage party in Ghaziabad.

Feb 20, 2002: The body of Nitish Katara found in a village in Bulandshahr. His alleged girlfriend Bharti Yadav, daughter of influential Uttar Pradesh politician D.P. Yadav, leaves for Britain.

March 11, 2002: The Tata Safari allegedly used in the murder recovered from GT Road, Karnal.

March 31, 2002: Uttar Pradesh police files a four-page chargesheet.

April 23, 2002: Prime accused Vikas and Vishal Yadav arrested from Madhya Pradesh.

Aug 23, 2002: Supreme Court transfers the case from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi.

Nov 23, 2002: Charges framed against the three accused - Vikas, Vishal and Sukhdev.

March 2004: All witnesses, except D.P. Yadav's daughter Bharti Yadav, depose in  court.

November 2005: Prime witness Bharti Yadav returns to India.

May 2006: Bharti Yadav's passport is revoked.

Nov 25, 2006: Bharti Yadav deposes in court after three years of notices and summons.

December 2007: The prosecution wraps up its final arguments and claims Bharti Yadav's alleged proximity to Nitish resulted in her brothers murdering him.

April 2, 2008: Trial court begins hearing the Nitish Katara murder case on a day-to-day basis.

April 23, 2008: Trial in the Nitish Katara murder case ends.

May 27, 2008: Court fixes date for pronouncement of verdict.

May 28, 2008: Court holds Vikas and Vishal Yadav guilty of murder. Quantum of sentence to be pronounced May 30.

December 2009: Delhi high court allowed the plea of Vishal Yadav to attend his sister's engagement ceremony on January 3.

June 7, 2010: key witness in the Nitish Katara murder case filed a petition in the court alleging he was being threatened and harassed by Uttar Pradesh government officials for testifying in the case.

August 20, 2010 : The third accused  Sukhdev Pehalwan's role proved in murder case

November 19, 2010 : Accused Sukhdev Pehalwan granted interim bail for a period of four days from November 24 to 27 for performing the 'shradh' (last rites) of his mother who passed away on November 10 at his native place in Uttar Prades

Wednesday, 6 July 2011: Sukhdev Pathan convicted.

Tuesday, 12 July 2011: It was honour killing, claims mother - Nitish's mother Neelam Katara  termed it as "shocking" that a Delhi Court did not consider the murder of her son Nitish Katara as an "honour killing".

Tuesday, 17 July 2012 : Vishal Yadav, contended before the Delhi High Court that Ajay Katara, a key prosecution witness, should be prosecuted for "perjury" for speaking "falsehood" before the court.

Friday, 8 March 2013: The elder brother of Nitish Katara lodged an FIR against unidentified persons alleging that they had made an attempt on his life, and named politician DP Yadav as the mastermind of the attack.

October 2014: Nitish Katara's mother Neelam Katara expressed her anguish over DP Yadav sharing the stage with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah, saying that such steps don't augur well for the common man.

Wednesday, 1 October 2014:  Vikas Yadav, one of the three convicts in the case, pleaded before the Delhi High Court that he be exempted from death penalty as his act was not so brutal or gruesome and there are chances of his reformation.

November 11, 2014 :  The Delhi High Court asked the city police how many inmates of Tihar Jail are provided 'A' class wards/treatment in government hospitals at state expense, while referring to the number of hospital visits made by the convicts in the Nitish Katara murder case.

December 8, 2014: The Delhi High  reserved its verdict on the sentence to be awarded to Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav's son Vikas and two others convicted in the over 12-year-old Nitish Katara murder case.

February6, 2015: The Delhi High Court awarded life term to Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav's son Vikas Yadav and his cousin Vishal without remission for 25 years in 12-year-old Nitish Katara murder case. The court awarded life imprisonment to Sukhdev Pehelwan, third convict in Katara murder case.
