Just a month after the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), for the first time in its history, introduced a transgender column in its admission form for engineering and pharmacy, nine transgender students from across Maharashtra have registered themselves for the exam. These students can thus be considered the first few to officially recognise themselves in the third gender category while enrolling for the state CET.

For the first time in 2017, students who wish to apply for the upcoming Maharashtra State Common Entrance test (MH-CET) conducted for undergraduate engineering and pharmacy courses, have been given the option of marking themselves under the transgender (TG) category. Earlier, the application form had only the male and female categories.

The application process began on February 14 and will end on March 23, 2017 without late fee. “This is a good sign and would help us understand how many students from this gender group enrol into various engineering and pharmacy institutes,” said a DTE official.
