National Human Rights Commission on Thursday directed the Telangana police to submit the reports, including that of autopsy, with regard to the alleged encounter in Nalgonda district in which five undertrial prisoners had died.

The commission has taken a suo motu (on its own) cognisance of the incident. It had issued a notice on April 9 to the Telangana government seeking a report.

Viquar Ahmed and four others, arrested for links with radical groups, were killed by the police in an alleged encounter in Nalgonda district on April 7 when they were being taken to a court in Hyderabad. According to the police, the five prisoners allegedly tried to overpower the escorting policemen.

During the hearing before the commission here today, Telangana government said that it had ordered an inquiry. Responding to a plea for expeditious enquiry by a judicial magistrate, NHRC chairperson KG Balakrishnan said that, "There is an order for the Chief Judicial Magistrate to conduct an enquiry. We have said you collect the report and submit it to the Commission. What more you want?"
