The National Human Rights Commission has ordered the district jail authorities to provide a compensation of Rs two lakh to the family of an inmate who allegedly committed suicide in 2008.

The undertrial prisoner Ankit, had allegedly committed suicide in the district jail on May 8, 2008.

A magisterial inquiry into the inmate's suicide case held the jail officials guilty of negligence of duty.

According to a senior state government official, the human rights body has ordered that the compensation amount be deducted from the salary of the jail officials.

The district authorities have been asked to comply with the order, the official said.
