NHRC asks Delhi Police to act against placement agencies involved in human trafficking

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday asked the Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi to draw up a list of registered and unregistered placement agencies which provide domestic help in the national capital within two weeks. The Delhi Police has also been asked to elucidate on the steps taken by its personnel to check the proliferation of such agencies that trade in humans. The directive comes after the human rights body took suo moto cognizance of dna's three-part report on India's slavery belt published between January 22 and 24 this year. To comply with the time limit, the Delhi Police might have to put its boots on the ground in locations perceived hard to penetrate for law-enforcement agencies in the national capital. Most unregistered placement agencies that are believed to involved in trafficking tribals from across India are located in areas like Shakurpur in Outer Delhi and Kotla Mubarakpur in South Delhi. Many of these agencies function without a signboard and are located in a maze of multi-storeyed buildings packed in heavily constricted by-lanes where even sunlight barely trickles in.
