The Rs 871-crore Srijan scam rocked both Houses of Bihar legislature on Wednesday as RJD MLAs led by leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav referred to ruling alliance leaders as “thieves” and staged a dharna on the Assembly premises demanding resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi in the interest of an impartial probe.

RJD, Bihar’s single largest party which now sits in Opposition after Nitish switched alliance partners and formed a government with the BJP, also moved an adjournment motion. But Speaker Vijay Choudhary said it would be allowed at an “appropriate time”. The RJD MLAs, joined by their Congress counterparts, trooped into the well of the House and raised anti-establishment slogans, compelling Choudhary to adjourn the House.

Tejashwi and his MLAs then staged a dharna near the statue of socialist leader Karpoori Thakur and alleged that the government was trying to destroy evidence with the help of some officials.

The scam involves Bhagalpur-based NGO Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti, which is accused of pilfering funds from the administration’s accounts under the pretext of welfare schemes for women, apparently with the help of government and bank officials. The Yadav scion’s new avatar has been lapped up by his party men, with a poster portraying him as film character ‘Baahubali’ coming up in Patna on Wednesday. It reads: ‘Jiya ho Lalu ke lal (Long live Lalu’s son)’

The ruling alliance, however, hit back at Tejashwi saying his demand for the resignation of the CM and the deputy CM, at a time when over 1.5 crore people were affected by floods, was shameful.

The Srijan scam issue was also raised by Congress spokespersons Manish Tewari and Ajoy Kumar, who sought the intervention of the Supreme Court for investigatign the scam.

Connecting the death of Mahesh Mandal, an accused in the scam, with the Vyapam deaths, the Congress leaders said, “The SC should take suo motu cognisance of the Vyapam disappearances and deaths, the Srijan death and deaths which have occurred in various such cases and order a court-monitored investigation.”
