The town of Aluva, located along the banks of the Periyar river in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, bore the brunt of this month’s floods. A week after the flood water receded, the town is now grappling with disposal of mounting wastes that are being flushed out of houses and shops.

After houses and shops remained under water for days, people are dumping unusable mattresses, cushions, sofas and electronic equipment along with other waste produce while cleaning their premises.

A non-voluntary organisation, Plan@Earth, has offered to collect and recycle all the waste disposed within Aluva municipal limits. “Apart from Aluva, we are also going to collect all waste from Chalakudy and two panchayats in Thrissur district — Kodakara and Matthathur — as part of a CSR project sponsored by Apollo Tyres,” said Sooraj Abraham, secretary of Plan@Earth, which is involved in waste management and recycling in five municipalities and six panchayats of Kerala.

Abraham said unsegregated waste would be collected and dumped at a temporary storage. “We will segregate all waste. Non-biodegradable waste, like mattresses, clothes, etc., would be kept separately and allowed to be dried,” he said.
