Next station of the Lifeline Express: Latur district

Two years ago, a train, Jaldoot, came to Latur to provide water to lakhs of parched citizens battling a drought in the Latur district of Marathwada region in Maharashtra. This year, Lifeline Express, India's only hospital-on-wheels has come to the district to provide free check ups for at least over 15,000 people.

Guardian Minister Sambhaji Patil-Nilangekar has worked to bring the Lifeline Express to Latur for free-of-cost medical check ups and treatment for preventive disabilities. This is being done in association with the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.

The Union Health Ministry, with the help of Impact Foundation and Railway Ministry had started Lifeline Express in 1991. So far, in the past 27 years, this hospital on wheels has provided medical facilities for people from 193 districts in 20 states. It has undertaken medical check ups for over 10 lakh citizens and has provided free-of-cost surgeries for over 1.2 lakh citizens.

Latur District Collector G Shrikant said that the district administration during its Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Program has identified children who require surgeries and they would undergo surgeries during the 20-day initiative.

Anil Prem Sagar, the deputy project director of Impact India Foundation that runs Lifeline Express said that till July 6, at least 15,000 citizens will undergo medical check ups and at least a 1,000 surgeries would be performed. He said that this is an initiative to provide medical services to rural India and in last 27 years, it has reached areas where its need was felt most.

The Lifeline express has 20 senior medical officers including staff and 50 to 60 senior doctors from all over the country are invited to treat the patients. The hospital-on-wheels started its work in Latur district on Saturday.
