New DGP Subodh Kumar Jaiswal assures of no repeat of 26/11; says won't be caught napping

Speaking to media after the meeting, Jaiswal stated that while preparing for the elections, the state police force will be working to maintain communal harmony and also it will be dealing with the terror threat perception in the backdrop of recent Pulwama terror attack.

Amidst reports on India facing terror threat via sea, Maharashtra's new Director General of Police Subodh Kumar Jaiswal on Wednesday stated that after the 26/11 attack, a lot of measures have been taken by the state and its entire force has been asked to respond to smallest of the incident. "We have not forgotten 26/11 and we will not be caught napping," Jaiswal said.

After taking over as the state DGP, Jaiswal visited Pune where he held meeting with senior police officers from Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerates, Pune rural police and officers from adjoining districts to assess the preparations of the force ahead of general elections.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Jaiswal stated that while preparing for the elections, the state police force will be working to maintain communal harmony and also it will be dealing with the terror threat perception in the backdrop of recent Pulwama terror attack.

Responding to a question regarding the police preparation in terms of recent terror threats through sea route which was earlier adopted in 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai in 2008 as well, Jaiswal said, "After that attack, several measures have been taken by the state such as raising quick response teams (QRT), procuring modern weapons. Each and every unit concerned has been assigned a specific role, and in case of emergency situation, they will act accordingly in coordination with each other. We will not be caught napping."

Jaiswal expressed his satisfaction regarding the security preparations for the elections. "I am satisfied with the preparation and we are ready to face any challenge which comes our way," he said.

When asked about the challenge of maintaining communal harmony during elections in the backdrop of Koregaon-Bhima riots which had taken place between two communities on January 1, 2018, he said, "We are already having a lot of dialogues with the communities to ensure peace. We are also taking those people in confidence who hold high regards in society and through them we are maintaining the harmony. Apart from that, all the unit commanders have been instructed to react to the smallest of the incident."

Jaiswal also stated that the state police will be keeping an eye over the social media to make sure the inflammatory messages and rumours are circulated in the society to disturb the law and order situation in any part of the state during the election period.
