National Eligibility cum Entrance Examinations (NEET) results for admission to medical colleges were declared on Friday with over six lakh students qualifying the test this year.

According to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), that conducted the NEET examination, over 11 lakh candidates had registered for the examination. Out of them, 6,11,539 candidates who have qualified the test will be able to get admission in over 65,000 medical seats in 470 colleges and over 25,000 dental seats in 308 dental colleges. Central government has made NEET mandatory to get admission in medical and dental colleges across the country.

The board has also declared a list of first 25 toppers from across the country. First topper is from Punjab and second and third positions have been secured by students from Madhya Pradesh. Two among the top 25 are from Delhi, ranked at number 20 and 25.

The results were originally supposed to be declared on June 8 but were delayed after the Madras High Court stayed the declaration of results on finding that while the NEET question papers for nearly 10.5 lakh students who took the examination in English and Hindi were same, they were different for those who appeared in the test in eight other vernacular languages.

It was only after the SC asked the board to declare results by June 26, overruling Madras High Court decision that the boards declared results.

CBSE had earlier this month challenged Madras HC's decision in SC. Additional solicitor general Maninder Singh had sought an urgent hearing on the CBSE's appeal before an SC bench.
