BJP MP Subramanian Swamy on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting postponement of competitive exams like the NEET and JEE.

His letter comes amid growing demand for the postponement of JEE and NEET examinations by students. National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission into undergraduate medical programmes and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission into engineering courses are scheduled to be held in September.

"I write this urgent letter because of my authentic information from every part of India that required infrastructure of the country is not yet in place for students to take the NEET/JEE & other Competitive Exams. In the city of Bombay for example, there is no public transport and people have to come from in the adjacent areas, often 20kms to 30kms away," he said.

"There is widespread desperation amongst the youth since this exam is make or break for them and they have to take it fully prepared," Swamy added.

The Rajya Sabha MP said that holding the exam "in my opinion may lead to a large number of suicides around the country of youth."

"Moreover, the Supreme Court judgment doesn't bind the government at all, on whether to now or two weeks later or two months later, the examinations. It is a policy decision of the Government," Swamy said.

"Therefore, I request you to please inform the Ministry of Education that these exams can be conducted after the Deepavali. I have spoken to Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and he was sympathetic to my suggestion but naturally, since this would require your concurrence, hence I am writing this urgent letter to you," Swamy said.

Please direct the Ministry of Education delay these examinations till alter Deepavali, he said in a request to Prime Minister Modi.

Earlier on August 17, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking the postponement of NEET and JEE.

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra dismissed the plea observing that the career of students cannot be put under jeopardy for long.

"Life cannot be stopped. We have to move ahead with all safeguards and all... Are you (students) ready to waste one whole year?" Justice Mishra said."Now, the courts are also going to open gradually for physical hearing. We also have these glass panels now," Justice Mishra said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the National Testing Agency (NTA), submitted before the apex court that all the safeguards will be taken while holding the exam.

JEE (main) exam is to be held online from September 1 to 6. The NTA has alaready issued admit cards for JEE aspirants while for NEET UG-2020, scheduled on September 13, admit cards are to be released this week.
