Watch out when you visit some of the government hospitals in the capital that have become breeding grounds for Aedes mosquito which causes dengue. At least 10 prominent hospitals --- including the GB Pant and Lok Nayak hospitals --- have become the danger zones for patients and their relatives with probability of suffering dengue looming large.

Not just the hospitals, even the railway properties, Metro stations, and government schools and colleges have become breeding grounds of the mosquitoes, leaving people vulnerable to the vector-borne disease.

According to an official of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), over a dozen challans have been issued to these hospitals by the Corporation. A list of ‘VIP challans’, as they are called, issued by the NDMC reveals a grim picture.

Besides these hospitals, challans have also been issued against the Chief Health Inspector of Northern Railways and Deputy Health Officer of Civil Lines zones in the North Corporation. The other hospitals include Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, ESI Hospital in Rohini, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Hospital in Patel Nagar, Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, Maharshi Valmiki Hospital and Kasturba Hospital, and other dispensaries and poly-clinics run by the North Delhi Corporation.

An NDMC official said the ‘VIP challans’ are the outcome of a drive launched against big institutions where mosquito breeding is more frequent than in the residential units. “The findings of the drive present an alarming picture despite sustained campaign against dengue. This time we have prosecuted the local managers of these institutions but if this is repeated, the CEOs, directors, and in case of hospitals the medical superintendents will be prosecuted,” said Mayank Sharma, Additional Commissioner (Health) in NDMC. He said strict directions have been issued to officials to ensure there is no mosquito breeding.

Officials said construction activities at most of these places had provided positive conditions for mosquito breeding. At the GB Pant Hospital, mosquito breeding was found at a construction site in the new Emergency block, while another construction site in Lok Nayak Hospital was breeding ground for larvae,
Other than the hospitals, 14 challans have been issued to various educational institutes including the prestigious Delhi Technical University (DTU), and other government-run schools and colleges. Four challans have been issues to the managers of Inderlok, Shastri Nagar and Rajendra Place Metro stations.

Some others who have been notified include the SHO of Anand Parbat police station, DTC depot managers at Shadipur and Wazirpur, Sub Divisional Officer of MTNL in Rajendra Nagar and some builders in the north areas who have been prosecuted by the civic body officials.
