The constituent parties of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar have expressed concern over delays in seat sharing formula for the 2019 Lok Sabha election, and stressed that the quicker an agreement is reached, the easier it will be for them to start the final phase of preparations.

Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) have all said that if the central leadership agreed to a seat sharing formula, and it was decided which party will get which constituency, they can commence mobilising workers at the booth level.

JD-U state presidetn Bashishtha Narayan Singh said, "We believe that the faster the seat sharing is finalised, the better it will be for both parties. Because every party needs to prepare for the polls."

JD-U leaders have maintained that given the party's "limited resources", it will be best if they know which seats to focus on for 2019.

Bashishtha, however, added that there was no tension between the allies. "Talks between Nitish Kumar and BJP president Amit Shah have been positive," he said.

Union minister Upendra Kushwaha's RLSP also wants the seat division to be done at the earliest to gauge its standing in the alliance.

"Some of the recent statements by Kushwaha against 'deteriorating law and order' in Bihar and cooking kheer with Yadavs are indicative that his allegiance may shift," a senior JD-U leader said.

State BJP minister Prem Kumar, however, was confident of an early resolution to these talks. "Our party will make an effort that all NDA constituents will sit together soon and decide at the earliest. The general election is around six months away, and everyone needs to plan their strategy and make final arrangements," he said.

A source said the JD-U wants the BJP to come up with a concrete seat sharing plan before September 16, when the JD-U state executive is scheduled to meet in Patna. After its national executive meet in July, the JD-U had declared itself the 'Big Brother' in Bihar, and maintained that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will be the face of the saffron alliance.

The Alliance

  • BJP, JD(U), LJP and RLSP are in an alliance in Bihar.
  • Media reports had said BJP will get 20 out of 40 seats in state, while the others will get 20 between them.
  • JD(U) insists it’s the ‘Big Brother’ and Nitish Kumar will lead alliance.
