Expressing serious concern over the decision of writer Nayantara Sahgal and poet Ashok Vajpeyi to return the prestigious 'Sahitya Akademi' awards, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday said if the situation similar to the Dadri lynching incident continues then the unity of the nation will be in danger.

NCP leader Tariq Anwar questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's studded on the Dadri lynching incident.

"It is a serious matter that both Mrs. Sahgal and Mr. Vajpeyi are returning their awards because of the situation in the country, including the Dadri lynching incident," said Anwar.

"The activities of the fundamentalist and communal forces are day by day increasing and our Prime Minister is not reacting on the issue. It seems that it is been done intentionally," he added.

Sahgal, who is the niece of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, earlier in the day said that the prevailing situation of the country is very pathetic.

"The Hindutva ideology, which is going on in the country right now, is ruining the name of the Hindus. And as a Hindu myself, I am very hurt," she said.
