If the BJP-led state government fails to fulfill its promise of making Maharashtra toll-free from June 1, then the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) would start a protest across the state.

"We will expose them if they do not act on their promises. On June 1, most of the toll plazas will have to stop charging motorists. Let see whether they act on it or not. If they fail to do so, we will protest," said NCP state president Sunil Tatkare.

During the state budget session, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced the scrapping of 12 toll plazas in the state. He had also promised that from May 31, in 53 more toll plazas, people driving light motor vehicles like cars and jeeps and also state transport buses will not have to pay charges. Of the 53 points, 27 belong to the PWD and 26 to MSRDC.

However, Mumbaikars will have to wait for their turn. The government has not yet decided whether to scrap toll at the five entry points of the city and on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway or not. Even Kolhapur will have to wait until May for a decision to be taken by the PWD minister.

Fadnavis had stated that there were practical difficulties faced by the government due to the 'no buy-back' clause in the toll agreement. However, Tatkare said: "Now they are changing statements. We want exemptions in all the toll plazas," he insisted.

BJP legislator Parag Alwani said, "When the Congress-NCP was in power for the past 15 years, why didn't they close the toll plazas? Since they could not meet people's expectations, they voted us to power. We are here for development and we will address the people's issue."
