Member of Parliament Amar Singh feels that students of premier institutes like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU)are constantly engaging in Maoist activities and after the indictment of prof GN Saibaba for his alleged Maoist links, the activities have increased, "alarmingly".

A question regarding the Maoist links was raised by Amar Singh, before the Human Resource Development Ministry in Parliament on Thursday, to which the ministry replied that there is no such information.

The question read — "Whether the Government is aware that naxal-related activities among students of premier institutes like Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University are growing at an alarming rate and magnitude."

"Whether it is a fact that consequent upon indictment and sentencing of a Professor of Delhi University and others by the court in Maharashtra, these activities have become more glaring," it added.

To which, Minister of State for Human Resource Development Mahendra Nath Pandey, in a written reply said: "Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University both have informed that no naxal related activities among the students have been reported. Delhi University has further clarified that situation has apparently not changed subsequent to the indictment of an Assistant Professor, Delhi University."

The professor mentioned here is GN Saibaba, an Assistant Professor of Delhi University, who was recently given life sentence in connection with his alleged naxal links. Along with him, the court had also found JNU student Hem Mishra and four others guilty of waging war against the country and supporting the ideology of the banned organisation, CPI (Maoist).

ONE OF THE TOP INSTITUTES

  • Recently, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University was ranked second and eight best university, respectively, in the country

  • A large section of students from both have been supporting Saibaba, saying that he has been wrongly convicted. The students have been holding demonstrations urging the authorities to let him free
