Navjot Kaur Sidhu resigned from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday, less than a month after her husband formally resigned from the party. BJP Punjab President Vijay Sampla has reportedly accepted her resignation.

Earlier in the day, she sent her one-line resignation to the party president at the party headquarters in Chandigarh. "I hereby resign from the primary membership of the party," Joshi quoted Kaur as saying in her resignation letter.

However, one of Kaur's aides said that she has not resigned from the party as an MLA. She is expected to address a press conference on Sunday in Amritsar giving reasons for her resignation.

Kaur was the former chief parliamentary secretary (Health). She was at loggerheads with SAD-BJP govt in Punjab and had also accused of the state government of meting out 'step-motherly' treatment to her constituency. Last year she had observed a hunger strike in protest against alleged blockade of funds by Punjab govt.

Kaur had also announced that she will not contest polls as long as BJP remained an ally of SAD.

In July this year, Navjot Singh Sidhu had resigned from Rajya Sabha citing differences with the party. Last month, he announced a new political front called Awaaz-e-Punjab, however he announced recently that the party will not be participating in Punjab elections slated for next year. Later he said that his political front was 'open to alliance' for the 'betterment of Punjab'.
