Associates of industrialist and Congress leader Naveen Jindal, who was on Tuesday present at the Patiala House Court complex, were caught on camera manhandling two journalists working with the Zee News network.

Both the journalists were covering the proceedings of the coal block scam in which the industrialist is an accused. While a camera recorded associates of Jindal pushing and shoving around journalist Aseem Manchanda who was accompanied by senior journalist Mahesh Gupta, the firm denied their involvement and claimed that it was the journalist who had instigated the lawyers for a confrontation.

"After the proceedings, Mr Jindal was on his way to leave the court premises when some striking lawyers stopped him. As some of the associates of Mr Jindal were wearing white shirts, the lawyers thought they were their colleagues and asked them why they were not on a strike. But when they came to know that the men in white shirts were, in fact, Mr Jindal's associates, they told them that the Congress party was not allowing a bill on civil suit to be passed in Parliament. They asked the associates of Mr Jindal if he could intervene," said Mahesh Gupta who can be seen in the video footage.

Aseem Manchanda, who can be clearly seen being pushed around, said he was merely listening to the conversation when the incident happened. “I was listening to the conversation when the associates of Mr Jindal started pushing me, and this was caught on camera. When my college came to my rescue, he too was manhandled. It was only after the intervention of some lawyers that Mr Jindal's associates stopped," said Manchanda.

In a statement released later in the evening on Tuesday, the spokesperson for Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), accused Zee News of irresponsible reporting and claimed that its reporters instigated a section of striking lawyers to disturb the peaceful protest inside court premises.

However, Mahesh Gupta told dna that this was not the first time he had been manhandled. He said that Jindal's associates are generally hostile to anyone who is in close proximity of the industrialist. He also said the company is contemplating on whether or not to take further action. " We do not want to confront anyone. We just want to do our job which is what we were doing at the court," said Gupta.
