Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Sonia Gandhi always enjoyed a warm relationship. It was a far cry from the hostile bickering witnessed between Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi during the last general elections. According to former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh's book, One life is not enough, former PM Vajpayee promptly arranged protection for Sonia Gandhi on request.

On one occasion in New York, Sonia Gandhi went with her Congress delegation but was not provided appropriate security. Natwar Singh was extremely perturbed by this although Sonia Gandhi wasn't particularly concerned. But Singh promptly called up Vajpayee. It was already midnight in New Delhi, but Vajpayee said that he would ensure security for the Congress President and all necessary arrangements were done within half an hour. The Indian high commissioner to the US ensured that a security ring was provided to Sonia Gandhi. It was a fitting example of courtesy extended by India's Prime Minister to a political rival.
