Nearly 75 delegates from 30 organisations, including Power Grid Corporation of India, deliberated the latest technologies associated with transformers — a critical element in the transmission and distribution of electricity — in the two day national level conference on ‘Modern Trends in Transformer Technology’   organised by Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd and Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) in Patiala, Punjab.

At the conference, speakers discussed ways to design and operate transformers which are more robust, reliable, and are also cost effective in initial investment.

NK Sharma, director of distribution, while addressing the conference stressed on the importance of maintaining reliability of electricity supply. He said that it has become more important to keep up to date with the latest technologies.

VK Kanjlia, Secretary, CBIP, in his welcome address said that the workshop has been organised to enrich power engineers with latest knowledge.  Vijayakumaran and VKLakhiani, experts in Transformer designing of international repute, hoped that all the participants get maximum benefits from the workshop.

Transformers are devices used in electrical circuits to change the voltage of electricity flowing in the circuit. The voltage coming to the substation at 1,15,000 or 46,000 volts is too high to go directly to neighbourhoods. Power transformers are used to step the voltage down to an acceptable level to bring into homes.
