The National Commission for Women has issued demanded an explanation from Sadhana Singh, the BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh's Mughalsarai, for her remarks that BSP chief Mayawati was 'a blot on womankind' and 'worse than a eunuch'. The notice comes after NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said on Sunday that the body would take suo motu cognisance of the remarks.

"… the remarks made are extremely offensive, unethical and shows disrespect towards the dignity and respect of women in general… the Commission strongly condemns such irresponsible and disparaging views of persons holding responsible positions," read the NCW notice to Sadhana Singh.

"In view of the above, you are hereby required to provide a satisfactory explanation to the Commission on the matter on receipt of this notice," the notice concluded.

Sadhana Singh had issued a statement on Sunday evening expressing regret for her remarks after a video clip of the speech sparked controversy.

"Former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati sold her dignity for power and joined hands with those who disrespected her... She is a blot on womankind. Cannot say if she can be counted among men or women, she is worse than an eunuch," Sadhana Singh had said.

Soon after controversy broke out over her remarks, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma had tweeted that the body would act on the matter. "Such derogatory statements are unbecoming of a leader and highly condemnable. @NCWIndia has taken Suo Motu cognisance and will be sending a notice to Sadhana Singh tomorrow," her tweet read.

Her remarks were met with criticism from across the political spectrum, including BJP ally and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale. While BSP's Satish Chandra Mishra and SP's Akhilesh Yadav characterised the remarks as a mark of the BJP's desperation over their alliance, the Congress termed them 'disturbing'.
