A 30-year-old Manipuri man was beaten to death in the Kotla Mubarakpur area of South Delhi. Reports suggest that the man was returning from a friend's house when a group of five to six men arrived at the spot by car and attacked him. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
"We have registered a case and investigation has been taken up. He was attacked by five-six men. There was no provocation from the part of the deceased," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) B S Jaiswal said. "We are trying to identify the attackers and the exact sequence of events," he said. Shaloni lived in Munirka area and was presently unemployed.
This comes just days after another Manipuri man was found dead after he drowned in a drain under mysterious circumstances. His friends had alleged he was running for his life before he jumped into the drain.
Earlier this year, a similar incident had led to the death of 20-year-old student Nido Tania hailing from Arunanchal Pradesh was also beaten to death in Delhi after an altercation with shopkeepers in the Lajpat Nagar area. In May this year, two Northeast students, along with a woman lawyer were assaulted in the court premises in Delhi by a mob of lawyers as they had filed a case against an advocate for molestation.

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju on Monday described the alleged killing of a Manipuri youth as serious and disturbing, and also assured a thorough probe into the case. "I have just seen the report. Police has already obtained information based on video footage. I am visiting the place after Question Hour. We are very serious and disturbed. The report says that it is a pre-planned attack and unprovoked. There must be some conspiracy behind it, but we are going to have a comprehensive inquiry in all the matter so that we can deal with the case very effectively," Rijiju said. Read more
The government had set up the BezBaruah committee which submitted its report to the government which recommended stricter laws within the ambit of the constitution to be framed for punishment for hate crimes. However, the report asks the students from the Northeast to adjust better to the cities they come into, including the learning of the local language. The report has also called upon Bollywood to use its reach and influence to bring down discrimination against the Northeastern people. It said, "As Bollywood plays such a prominent role in forming images in the minds of people, DoNER ministry (development of north east region) should consider a suitable scheme of incentives for encouraging the use of North-East locales for Bollywood pictures," the committee recommends.
However it is ironical that recently, social media has been abuzz with critising Bollywood for doing exactly the same: discriminating against the Northeast. The first look of Mary Kom's biopic is out and leading lady Priyanka Chopra is seen with prosthetic makeup to look the part of a Manipuri girl. Many people believe Bollywood has given out a message that no Northeastern actress could actually pull off the role.
