Several students who had appeared for the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA)  said that the paper was not in line with the scheme of marks and pattern given to them in the brochure released a few days before the exam.

A total of 40 thousand students appeared for NATA in 33 cities and 70 centres across the country. The exam, conducted by the Council of Architecture (CoA) was for the first time conducted as a paper pencil exam as opposed to the online mode. This year, students had to appear for a one day paper in the offline mode on April 16.

Students said that the question paper was not in line with the paper scheme mentioned in the 2017 NATA brochure. “As per the brochure, Mathematics would constitute of 40 marks of the 200 marks paper with 20 questions of 2 marks each. However, the paper had over 33 questions of Mathematics with a total of 66 marks allotted,” said a student from Mumbai. Students also said that the paper tested a few concepts from physics which had no mention in the brochure.

“A large number of students who appeared for the exam this year faced issues while writing the paper as it was not as per the pattern laid by the CoA in the brochure. This year, students were not allowed to carry set squares and other mechanical instruments required for drawing which was not a norm earlier and finds no mention in the 2017 brochure as well. With a huge number of students appearing for the architecture entrance every year, the CoA should try and stick to the set of guidelines that it has issued so that students don’t have to experience this unnecessary stress,” said Ashok Goel, an educationist from Delhi.

Biswaranjan Nayak, President, CoA said, “The scheme of marks and concepts mentioned in the brochure act as a guideline for the paper and is not exactly replicated for the main exam. Some minor changes in the scheme of marks is bound to happen.”  He added, that the CoA decided to not allow drawing instruments as they are expected to draw freehand.
