An irate mob set fire to a truck, for transporting what they alleged is cow flesh, near Vinchur in Nashik district today morning, after which a bandh was observed in Lasalgaon and Vinchur to protest against alleged slaughter of cows.
Former Shiv Sena MLA Kalyanrao Patil, former sarpanch Kaydutta Holkar and panchayat samiti member Prakash Patil organised a protest rally which reached Lasalgaon police station and submitted a memorandum to assistant police inspector RB Sanap.
The cost of the alleged cow flesh is Rs 4.70 lakh, the police said. Addressing a gathering later, former Shiv Sena MLA Kalyanrao Patil and others demanded the immediate arrest of the main suspects.
According to the police, a truck containing flesh was seized and arrested truck driver Sayyad Hanif Jilani (24) from Arab Mohalla in Aurangabad district as well as cleaner Mohammed Habib Hanif Sheikh (24) of Sneh Nagar in Aurangabad.
Cases were filed against them under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act of 1976, Sections 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the Mumbai Motor Vehicles Act as well as Sections 83 and 177 of the Indian Penal Code, the police said, adding that Additional District Superintendent of Police Prashant Mohite visited Lasalgaon.
Three days ago enraged people had set fire to a truck carrying alleged cow flesh in Ahmednagar district after which both its driver and cleaner were arrested.
