Former chairman of Jet Airways Naresh Goyal and his wife Anita Goyal were denied permission to travel abroad on Saturday by the immigration authority at Mumbai airport, sources said.

The couple was to travel by Dubai-bound Emirates flight EK 507 when officials cut short their journey, they said.

The checked-in baggage, which was in the name of Anita Goyal, was also offloaded from the flight, which was scheduled to depart at 3.35 pm.

Naresh Goyal could not be reached for comments. Response to a query sent to Emirates was also awaited.

Last month, the Jet Airways staff had appealed to the Mumbai police to impound the passports of Goyal and other directors and senior members of the Jet management as the debt-hit carrier had not paid salaries to its employees for past many months.

The travel curbs on the couple comes just after the Lok Sabha elections that saw repeated Opposition attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Vijay Mallya case. The founder of the now-defunct Kingfisher airline has fled to the UK after his carrier failed to clear loans over Rs 9,000 crore.

With a landslide mandate for Modi, it is expected that the new government will leave leave no stone unturned to help banks reduce their bad loans. Goyal is not under any investigation.

Naresh Goyal and Anita had resigned from the board of Jet, which he founded 26 years ago.

Jet Airways, which owes nearly Rs 8,400 crore to lenders, has been grounded for more than a month and the attempt made by its lenders to bring an investor on board has failed. Earlier this week, the Hinduja Group said it was considering a bid for the airline.
