Coinciding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Sri Lanka from Wednesday to attend International Vesak Day celebrations, both countries are looking for a permanent solution to the issue of Tamil fishermen who get caught by Sri Lankan Navy for transgressing water boundaries. There is a Rs 15,00 crore worth plan to augment deep-sea fishing capacity of Tamil Nadu fishermen .

According to Sanjay Panda, Joint Secretary (Indian Ocean Region), External Affairs Ministry, the deep sea fishing needs long liners which costs around Rs 65 lakhs. The boats equipped with heavy trawling equipment and large nets can drag fishing gear as much as two kilometres deep into the ocean.

Though, no official engagements are lined up for Modi as he is visiting to participate in the Vesak festival, he will interact with Sri Lankan leaders to review progress in bilateral relations.

"We do not envisage any formal talks, but he will be interacting with the leaders and review the relationship in its entirety. Nothing is specifically earmarked for discussion during the current visit," Panda told reporters.

In his last visit to Sri Lanka, New Delhi and Colombo had signed a pact to boost economic ties. Modi and Wickremesinghe had then discussed a range of bilateral issues and matters of mutual interest. The pact also provided a framework to identify infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka where India could invest.

The celebrations during the 'International Day of Vesak' in Colombo from May 12 to 14 will include an International Buddhist Conference that would witness the participation of over 400 delegates from more than 100 countries. Vesak is the most important day in Buddhist calendar, marking the commemoration of Lord Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing away.
