Less than a week after taking oath as Prime Minister, Narendra Modi paid a visit to the BJP headquarters, setting the tone for government-party coordination. Since then Modi has paid nearly half a dozen visits to the party office.

By the time the Modi regime completed 100 days, the government-party kinship seemed to have acquired unprecedented synergy. Unlike in the previous NDA regime when there was frequent friction between the government and party, this time the strategy is aimed at working in sync.

Right from Modi’s close associate Amit Shah taking over as BJP president to a “minister a day” at the party office, the effort on both sides has been to work closely.

Three party leaders-- Amit Shah and general secretaries Ram Madhav and Ram Lal-- are key points of interaction with the government, party sources said. These leaders get in touch with senior ministers in the event of any need arising in the party, they said.

The BJP has also set up coordination panels on issues like implemention of Jan Dhan yojna and other schemes. Over the past 22 days, a minister has been visiting the BJP headquarters to interact with the party. Barring the Prime Minister, finance minister Arun Jaitley, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Parliamentary affairs Venkaiah Naidu, all ministers are expected to take time off once a month to spend time with the party.

Both teams-- that of Modi and Shah-- are a blend of the young and experienced. While Modi’s council of ministers has excluded anyone over 75, in Shah’s team of office bearers, 60 per cent are below 50. Both have focused on choosing those “who can deliver”, a party leader said.

A BJP functionary said Modi’s stress on coordination, cleanliness and connecting with the people reflects in the attitude of the party.

The party’s various cells have also been asked to work as a bridge between people and government, sources said.

However, when it comes to political strategy, the government and party have not always struck the same chords. While some party leaders from Uttar Pradesh have made controversial statements that can lead to polarisation ahead of by-polls, the government has maintained a stoic silence on it.
