The Narendra Modi government on Tuesday recommended names for appointment as Governors of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Goa, Zee News sources said.

A former union minister from the NDA-I, C Vidyasagar Rao, has been nominated to be the Governor of Maharashtra, while former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh has been recommended for the same post in Rajasthan, and the Speaker of Gujarat Assembly Vajubhai Vala will take charge of Karnataka.

Goa, on the other hand, which was until recently headed by Margaret Alva after she was transferred there from Rajasthan, will be assigned to former president of BJP Mahila Morcha Mridula Sinha. BV Wanchoo, who held the post prior to Alva, was among those Congress-appointed governors to have resigned in the first wave, after the NDA government took charge. However, it is not clear when the official announcement of their appointment will be made by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

These appointments come after a series of Congress-appointed governors resigned from their positions or were transferred and sacked by the newly-appointed BJP government. The last among them was Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, who was transferred overnight to Mizoram, following which he tendered his resignation.

Similarly, earlier this month, Governor of Mizoram Kamla Beniwal was sacked. Earlier, as the Governor of the state of Gujarat for four years, she had running disparities with Narendra Modi, the then chief minister of the state.

More recently, Sheila Dikshit's recent meeting with Rajnath Singh has also fueled rumours of her resignation from the post of the governor of Kerela.

The post of the Governor of Karnataka has remained vacant since July end, when former Law Minister HR Bhardwaj had completed his five year tenure, while the post of Rajasthan Governor fell vacant after Margaret Alva completed her tenure early this month.

Prior to that, in a mass exodus of sorts, five governors including West Bengal's MK Narayanan, Uttar Pradesh's BL Joshi, Chhattisgarh's Shekhar Dutt, Nagaland's Ashwani Kumar, and Goa's BV Wanchoo resigned from their posts. Virendra Kataria, a former Congress leader, was also sacked as Puducherry Lieutenant Governor last month.

Uttrakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi, however, challenged the Modi government's moves to ease him out of office, bringing the controversy over the removal of UPA-appointed Governors under the judicial lens.
