BJP president Amit Shah on Thursday asked the proposed 'mahagathbandhan' (grand alliance) to spell out the name of its prime ministerial candidate. His demand comes a day after top opposition leaders agreed to work together and consider forging a pre-poll front.

Addressing a convention of Shakti Kendra Pramukh in Sindhanur in Raichur district of Karnataka, he mocked at the proposed alliance saying if it came to power, there will be different "power houses" and every day there will be a different prime minister. "I ask 'Rahul Baba' (Congress president) Rahul Gandhi who is the leader of your Mahagathbandhan?" he said.

Earlier in the day, at an event in Erode, he yet again pointed out that it had "no leader, no principle or philosophy" and that it was "an alliance for power." On the other hand, he said the NDA wants to take the country forward, ensure its security and move ahead with the concept of 'sabka saath sabka vikas,' alluding to Modi's oft-repeated reference to inclusive growth. Specifically for Tamil Nadu, he claimed, the party will forge a strong alliance to face the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and contest all 39 seats.

He was addressing the handloom and powerloom associations in Tamil Nadu's western district Erode.

"I want to assure the people of Tamil Nadu that the BJP is going to contest the elections in a strong alliance with an ally," he said in his brief remarks on a poll-pact.

Hours after his speech in Erode, BJP's Tamil Nadu election in-charge and party treasurer, Piyush Goyal, flew to Chennai to hold talks with prospective allies including AIADMK. Sources in BJP said that Railway Minister Goyal planned to meet AIADMK co-coordinator and Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami at his residence.

Shah, meanwhile, addressed the party's booth committee members in Erode, and asked them to be vigilant during the poll, appealing to them to strive for the party's victory.
